AI over iPhone Messages via satellite
Out of range, an iPhone 14 or later can still send a text by satellite. Send it to +1 (209) 379-8911 and an AI assistant texts back a short answer in the same thread. There's no app to install.
What you need
- iPhone 14 or later on iOS 18 or later, in the US.
- A carrier that supports SMS via satellite. Our number takes regular SMS, not iMessage, and Apple says SMS via satellite depends on your carrier and carrier fees may apply. Ask your carrier before you count on it.
- Open sky. Apple says you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky and the horizon.
How it works
- Save the number now, while you still have signal.
- Send your first message from home. It signs you up, and the welcome text arrives over the regular network instead of over satellite.
- Out of range, open Messages. With no cellular and no Wi-Fi, your iPhone offers Messages via satellite and shows you where to point it.
- Ask one specific question. Our answer is usually ready in under a minute after your message arrives.
Test it before the trip
Airplane mode is not a test: it switches satellite off too, so the message goes nowhere. To test for real, go outside somewhere with no signal at all, open Messages and text us. If the answer comes back, the setup works.
SOS stays SOS. We answer questions and can't send anyone to you. If someone's life is at risk, use your iPhone's SOS via satellite first, then ask us what to do while you wait.
FAQ
Which iPhones work?
iPhone 14 or later on iOS 18 or later, in the US. An older iPhone can't text over satellite, but with even one bar of cellular signal it reaches us like any phone.
Does my carrier need to support it?
Yes. Our number receives regular SMS, not iMessage, and Apple says SMS via satellite depends on your carrier and carrier fees may apply. Check with your carrier, then run one real test before the trip.
Why didn't my test go through?
Check airplane mode first: it turns satellite off as well. Then test outside with a clear view of the sky, somewhere with no signal at all.
How long does an answer take?
Apple says sending takes about 30 seconds under open sky and can take over a minute under light tree cover. Our reply is usually ready in under a minute after your message reaches us.
What does it cost?
First 3 questions free, then $15 for 100 messages or $7.99/mo unlimited, and first aid questions are always free. Most answers fit a single 160-character text, and a long one arrives as two or three. A credit is spent only when an answer reaches you.
Can it replace my iPhone's SOS?
No. SOS via satellite connects you with people who can send help. We answer questions. Keep both.
Set it up while you have bars
Save the number and send one question while you still have signal. Then try it once outside, somewhere with no signal at all.
